It is said that, at the time of Caligula’s murder, Claudius was found hiding behind a curtain in the palace! He was brought out into the camp of the Praetorian Guard a very frightened man, and here proclaimed Caesar.

Claudius, the son of the elder Drusus, was born at Lugdunum in 10 BC where his father was governor of Gaul. Weak-minded in youth, he had grown up among servants and had been carefully kept out of public sight in order not to compromise the dynasty. He had later become a diligent student and acquired much learning of which he made a display at inopportune moments. His long speeches in the Senate were dreaded and ridiculed and he was a great authority on Etruscan history. It was said he could speak the Etruscan language, the language of the primitive founders of Rome. In later ages Claudius’ book on the Carthaginian wars was considered a masterpiece.
